| | Laird Hamilton - Millennium Wave poster M03Teahupoo 17th August 2000 at 11.25 am, big wave tow-in legend, Laird Hamilton, entered the history books by riding the heaviest wave ever surfed. He had been in Tahiti for two weeks shooting a film with Jack McCoy for his sponsor Oxbow. I was production co-ordinator while also shooting stills for advertising and editorial purposes. As the morning of the 17th unfolded the set waves just got bigger and bigger. Around high tide the sets became more consistent and Laird stepped up to the challenge. The photo was taken with a Nikon F5 camera and a 70 – 200 zoom lens shooting at 9 frames per second. This poster shot was No 38 out of a 36-exposure film! Had I used another camera the shot would simply have never existed. 60 x 80cm (24 x31inches).

| | Mentawai Gold wave poster M01This world-class right-hander is situated near a small fishing village in a small but perfect bay. This photo was taken in July 2003 during a boat charter surf trip. The sun had just crept behind the coconut trees but the rays of light were still illuminating a large puffy cloud above and behind the line-up. No filters were used to capture this image: the colour you see is the real colour of the wave. That evening I witnessed a rare show of natural light and colour. 60 x 80cm (24 x31inches).

When the surfer hits the most critical part of the wave the bowl section, the volume of water moving up the face is so immense that the surfer needs to put all his weight at the back of the board right above his fins.
