Laird Hamilton - Millennium Wave poster M03

Teahupoo 17th August 2000 at 11.25 am, big wave tow-in legend, Laird Hamilton, entered the history books by riding the heaviest wave ever surfed. He had been in Tahiti for two weeks shooting a film with Jack McCoy for his sponsor Oxbow. I was production co-ordinator while also shooting stills for advertising and editorial purposes. As the morning of the 17th unfolded the set waves just got bigger and bigger. Around high tide the sets became more consistent and Laird stepped up to the challenge. The photo was taken with a Nikon F5 camera and a 70 – 200 zoom lens shooting at 9 frames per second. This poster shot was No 38 out of a 36-exposure film! Had I used another camera the shot would simply have never existed. 60 x 80cm (24 x31inches).

It is one of the world’s most beautiful waves, for no other breaks with such precision and intensity. This image captures the whole essence of this perfect wave. Laird Hamilton Teahupoo surf poster

This photo also made numerous magazine and newspaper covers around the world. It epitomizes the sheer power of Laird’s technique and survival stance. When the surfer hits the most critical part of the wave the bowl section, the volume of water moving up the face is so immense that the surfer needs to put all his weight at the back of the board right above his fins. Laird is pushing back so hard that it looks as though his front foot is about to break the strap on his board. 50 x 70cm (19.5 x 27.5 inches).

Maldives panoramic wave poster MP4

The Maldives Archipelago is a chain of tropical islands in the Indian Ocean renowned for their white sand beaches, brilliant turquoise lagoons and swaying palms – a pristine paradise now firmly established on the world surf map. This image of an unknown wave discovered during a surf exploration boat trip was taken in the central atoll area. Surfing is relatively new in the area so the wave is probably still waiting to be named. I used a regular camera with a water housing. 60 x 20 cm (23½ x 7½ inches)
