CARVE SURFING MAGAZINE - ISSUE 108

Midsummer Madness

Summer has been pretty sweet so far in Britain and Ireland. Several nice swells, lots of offshores and warm weather. Throw a few parties and festivals into the mix and you’ve got plenty to celebrate. Not that any of our contributors needed any encouragement, they’ve been out there lapping it up like a herd of camels with heatstroke. Here’s the best of the summer madness…so far!

NO CROWDS...GUARANTEED

This month our occasional series of articles about off-the-beaten-track surf destinations includes Libya and Madagascar. Luckily our team escaped the clutches of Colonel Gadaffi’s ‘tourism security’, and avoided being chucked into a sweaty pit and turned into he-bitch sex slaves.

Fink- Tank

In the last couple of issues we’ve checked out performance sticks, eggs, fishes longboards and everything in-between. But is there something we’ve forgotten? Like those little sticky-out things that help us steer? Yep, we used to overlook them too...until a couple of sets of new fins changed our boards and our lives. Now we’re obsessed — fins are cool! Here are some insights from the world’s top fin designers.

The Knowledge

A bunch of questions kept cropping up in the CARVE office in the last couple of months. Like, why is Stokesy’s surfing so sharp at the moment? How did Reubs get his airs wired? And does Sam Lam actually have a wave magnet shoved up his arse? We decided to find out a bit more in a desperate attempt to get fit for our UKPST autumn assault. You’ll be pleased to note we didn’t have to put on any surgical gloves in the process.

Bonkers!

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere...God, we hate it! While any waves over shoulder-high are a cause for celebration here, it’s been frickin’ pumping every day over there. Mind you, if we’d been hanging out with Fergal Smith we might be talking to you via some gypsy clairvoyant by now, because we’d probably be dead. The little man from Mayo flew straight from great waves at Teahupoo into a psycho West Oz slab-fest. Check out all the heaving, warping action from latest sessions at The Right, Red Beard’s and Supers.
