DONATE TO HAITI APPEAL

Haiti has some good waves and was featured in CARVE Issue 110. The situation for hundreds of thousands of people remains critical, although local surfers Randall Toussaint and Russell and Vadim Behrmann are all okay. Sam Bleakley, who visited Haiti last year, writes:
"Words, photos and news reports will never be able to capture the full extent of the unfolding Haitian tragedy. In terms of the economic and political stability, it could put the country back a whole generation. But we can help the heartbreak and suffering by donating some aid. Haiti deserves it. Forever dogged in the media for natural disasters, corruption, radical vodou rituals and poverty, Haiti is actually an extremely exciting and culturally rich place, with a colourful style of art that should be celebrated the world over.
"I have visited Haiti twice and I found it to be the most captivating and inspiring place I have ever been. The surf is good, the people are welcoming, and the resourcefulness of their communities never ceased to amaze me. Thankfully, the handful of surfing friends I have in Haiti are all okay. But hundreds of thousands of their fellow brethren are not. They are in desperate need of medical supplies, food and shelter.
"Haiti was the first black republic in the world, a place born of revolt. There has long been poverty here, in material terms, but no poverty of spirit. Since the earthquake this spirit will be stretched in unimaginable ways, for years to come. We must help keep this special Haitian spirit alive by helping in any way we can."
