Denis - A Waldron Bros Film
Reviewed by Jonny Roberts
What’s it all about? First they thrilled you with the delights of ‘Raised Heights’ and now the Waldron Bros dare back for a second time, with the somewhat strangely entitled picture ‘Denis’. The riders throughout are predominately Australian enticing you the watcher into the fantasy world that is the Cooke Islands, with dreamy imagery of tropical waves and surrounds also featured destinations are Mexico, Queensland and WA with riders such as Rawlings, Hardy and Winchester all with meaty sections. It seems ever evident to me that we are entering a new era of perspective in the life of performance bodyboarding and this is displayed nowhere better than by what you will see in this film.
Golden moments? Highlights for me mainly consisted of the sections studying the freesurfing of Hardy, Rawlins and Winny. Winnies opening boost is one of the highest and driest I’ve latched eyes on, the chap really has coconuts, while Rawlins and Hardy’s dismantling of macking Puerto remains flawlessly destructive.
Lows? Some DKers may feel a touch unfulfilled with a few whippings and floatings from Mr Lackey the only morsel to feed off. My other hang up is there’s nowhere near enough Jono Bruce with regards to his stature as a rider.
Soundtrack? The music doesn’t really stray far from a generally rocky theme and is backed up by editing of a decent level, listen out Cure fans for a treat.
Length? Around 45-50 minutes.

RETROSPECT PART II and The DK Story double disc
In this the sequel to Retrospect, Strohy continues looking back at the bodyboarding scene from its development in the eighties to its high performance level now. It also features the new generation, how they've elevated us to new heights with the likes of Stewey and co. paving the way. This film looks closely at the jack-stance and contains timeless dropknee images. There's also interviewing with old legends, passing on their wisdom about what Mason Rose has dubbed "A martial art."
Retrospect is a strong, historic, insightful and heartfelt production by Strohy. Modern riders feature with those from the beginning. For the legends it must be crazy to see how those seeds they planted have grown, all the big moves going down today are a testament to their beginnings. Let's not forget that the DK Story has probably the most complete DK lineup of any film in the past and is sure to inspire anyone wanting to get up this summer.

HERITIC
Heretic is another prime example of a bodyboard video not following the norm. The action is made up of the best UK and international riders in waves ranging from Tahiti and Y Bocs to previously unseen reefs and wedges here in the UK.
Best bits? There's epic footage of Prisk at Lacerations, Ali Daniels in France and Wall at Supersuck, Black Rock and just about everywhere else he goes (which is a lot of places). Gruff includes anyone who busts something whilst he's shooting and it's good to see the relatively unknown guys who surf around the Southwest going for it in a big way.
Overall? Ground breaking in terms of British riding and production, an essential addition to any DVD collection.

AGAINST
THE GRAIN
Mickey Smith’s mix of natural talent with the camera and
religious commitment to bodyboarding has produced onscreen gold.
For the first time, Mickey has made the bodyboarding world smaller
for Brits. They appear side by side with world champs, soul heroes
and pretty much anybody that’s ever appeared on a poster
on your bedroom wall. High action with a soul vibe was always
the challenge for any extreme sports video producer but Mick’s
come up with a wicked documentary approach that gives an incredible
insight into the elite bodyboarders of Britain and the world.
Featuring Stef Skajarowski, Ben Player, Danny Wall, Brenden Newton,
Tamega, Sean Virtue, Jack Johns and many more. Filmed in Ireland,
Tahiti, Hawaii, the Canaries and Oz. A must for your DVD collection.

ALTER
EGOS
Top Australian bodyboarder Joe Jordanoff gives ‘life on
the other side of the lens’ a go with a smart new production
featuring the world’s top boogers in the world’s most
jaw droppingly perfect waves. The opening scene to the vid is edited
to a mid eighties rave tune which whilst being different seems
to work quite well. There’s your usual thrash metal sections
as well with the majority of the footage coming from West Oz,
in fact if the ‘West is Best’ article in this mag
was made into a DVD it would be this vid! All the top West Oz
crew get sections. As usual Hardy shows the smoothest approach
to the hardest moves. Virtue busts some huge moves at all the
breaks in his back yard and vid producer, editor and director
Joey J, whips some sick drop knee turns, and excellent prone riding,
with some incredible tube riding. On the world travel section
there are a few waves of Wall and co. at Levie and Spot M which
is good to see. All in all, the best vid that I’ve seen
for ages. – Rob Barber
