The sun shone and the waves pumped for the SurfGirl Protest Phase Two Coaching Weekend on 29-30 September.

The course catered for girls who have surfed before but wanted to take their riding to the next level under the watchful eye of British Junior team coach Carlos Baratta and Protest team rider Dominique Kent. The conditions were excellent on Saturday with the girls spending five hours in the water ironing out style and technique problems. The session was videoed so that classroom analysis could take place afterwards.

Head coach Dom Kent commented, “The waves were perfect on Saturday and many of the girls took their riding beyond an intermediate level in the clean conditions. The video analysis worked well and there was some great feedback for the girls to learn from. Sports scientist Glenn Eldridge gave the girls a great presentation on improving fitness to promote good technique, style and overall performance. A number of the girls are returning for further coaching in the future when the conditions shape up again.”

Unfortunately the waves dropped in size for the Sunday afternoon so the girls opted to postpone their coaching for a day when the conditions will be more challenging. At the end of the weekend there were awards for the most improved surfer, the best move of the weekend and the best wipeout. All the girls were also presented with a well-stuffed goodie bag from event sponsors Protest.

Given the popularity of these courses we hope to run more next year, so watch the site and mag for updates. Full details of what to expect on one of these weekends is given below.

The protest SurfGirl Experience - Phase Two Coaching Course

September 29-30 2007

WHAT TO EXPECT
The weekend is aimed at girls from 8 - 80 who have surfed before and are at a level where paddling, catching waves and getting to their feet is no longer a problem. The course is being held early in autumn to limit crowds and increase the chance of scoring reasonable waves. Surfing lessons will be held in smaller groups than usual to allow more individual focus, pin point areas that need improving and work on specific manoeuvres from bottom turning to floaters as necessary. You’ll be taught by top surf instructors from the English Surf Federation Centre of Excellence plus Protest team riders.
Video analysis will be used to identify problems and troubleshoot technique faults. There will also be specific manoeuvre training/fitness tips by British Junior surf team coach and sports scientist Glenn Eldridge. But don’t worry, it’s not boot camp and there will be plenty of laughs along the way, as well as a chill out yoga session to end the weekend.

WHAT YOU NEED
We would expect most girls to bring their own equipment but can help out if you need some - contact Rob for help. Other than your board and wetsuit we recommend some warm, loose clothing that you can easily change to and from. Thin layers and a warm, waterproof jacket are essential. If you have your own yoga mat please bring it along, otherwise a beach towel is fine.

The English Surfing Federation Surf School is on the site of The Cribber Green Rooms Surf Lodge, 30 Headland Road, Newquay, TR7 1HN. For directions check out www.englishsurfschool.com.

FITNESS
The fitter that you are, the more you will get out of the course, but as before — it isn’t boot camp! If you’re tired you can rest and re-join the group when suits you. It’s a matter of everybody improving at their own pace with a laid back feel to the course.
